Flu season is the time of year when influenza viruses circulate most heavily, leading to more cases of the flu in communities across the country. In Tampa, flu activity usually picks up in late fall, peaks during the winter, and tails off in early spring. While the flu is common, it can also be serious, especially for young children, older adults, and anyone with a chronic health condition.
The good news is that a few simple steps can help you stay healthy and recover faster if you do get sick. Here is a practical guide to flu season for Tampa residents.
Why the Flu Hits Hard Every Year
The flu is caused by influenza viruses, which change slightly from year to year. That is why a flu shot you got last season may not fully protect you this season, and why a new vaccine is developed each year to match the strains expected to circulate.
Recent flu seasons have been especially active across the United States, with hospitals seeing high numbers of cases throughout the winter months. The flu is not just a bad cold. It often comes on suddenly with a high fever, body aches, fatigue, and a dry cough that can keep you sidelined for a week or longer.
Who Should Be Extra Careful
Anyone can get the flu, but some people are more likely to develop serious complications like pneumonia or hospitalization. Higher-risk groups include adults age 65 and older, children under 5, pregnant patients, and people with chronic conditions like asthma, diabetes, heart disease, or weakened immune systems. For these groups, a yearly flu shot is one of the most important protective steps you can take.
When Flu Season Hits Tampa
In Florida, flu activity typically picks up in October or November, peaks between December and February, and slows down by April. Cooler weather, holiday travel, and more time spent indoors all contribute to higher transmission during this window. Getting a flu shot in September or October gives your body about two weeks to build up immunity before cases start climbing.
Where to Get a Flu Shot
You do not need a doctor’s appointment, insurance, or a primary care visit to get a flu shot. A+ Family Urgent Care offers walk-in flu shots for adults and children throughout the season, with online booking available if you prefer to schedule ahead.
Flu shot pricing for patients is shared upfront before your visit, so you know exactly what you are paying. Most insurance plans also cover flu shots as a preventive service with no out-of-pocket cost.
Does the Flu Shot Really Help?
The flu shot does not guarantee you will avoid getting sick, but it significantly reduces your chances of catching the flu and makes the illness milder if you do. Vaccinated people who still get the flu are less likely to be hospitalized or develop complications. The flu shot also helps protect the people around you, especially infants, elderly family members, and anyone with a weakened immune system.
Everyday Habits That Help
Beyond the flu shot, a few daily habits go a long way. Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after being in public spaces. Avoid touching your face, and wipe down frequently used surfaces like phones, steering wheels, and doorknobs. If you feel sick, stay home and rest so you do not spread the virus to coworkers, classmates, or family.
Getting enough sleep, drinking water, and eating well are simple ways to keep your immune system strong through the busiest months of the season.
When to Come in for Treatment
If you do catch the flu, timing matters. Prescription antiviral medications like oseltamivir (Tamiflu) work best when started within 48 hours of the first symptoms. They can shorten the duration of the illness and lower the risk of complications, but the benefit drops the longer you wait.
Visit urgent care for a same-day evaluation if you have a sudden high fever, severe body aches, fatigue, chills, or a dry cough that came on quickly. A provider can run a rapid flu test in minutes and prescribe antiviral medication on the spot if you test positive. This is especially important for anyone in a higher-risk group.
Emergency Warning Signs
Head to the emergency room right away if you have trouble breathing, chest pain, severe weakness, confusion, persistent vomiting, or bluish lips. In children, watch for fast or labored breathing, dehydration, or being unusually unresponsive.
Stay Ahead of the Season
Flu shots, smart habits, and quick treatment when you feel sick are the three best ways to get through flu season without missing weeks of work or school. A+ Family Urgent Care is open seven days a week with extended hours for walk-in flu shots, rapid flu testing, and same-day treatment.
